A Happy-Sad Sports Starter for 2014 (San Diego view)

The first week of 2014 brought two great [Happy] thrills to us San Diego fans : Chargers football and SDSU Aztecs men’s basketball victories that most call major upsets.

The very Sad news of this week was the passage of “Colonel” Jerry Coleman – USMC aviator, NY Yankee star, then our long-time SD Padres broadcaster. He even squeezed in a year of managing the Pads :).

Though I felt that Jerry stayed in the broadcast booth for too long, I truly respect his achievements OFF and on the field.

I’ll never forget one quote from him: “The biggest achievement in my life was attaining my Navy Wings of Gold”.

This baseball throw-back, like Ted Williams, Willie Mays and other veterans that took time from sports careers to serve their country – impress the heck out of me.

Jerry – I’ll “HANG A STAR ON THAT ONE”>  You are missed.
